Former Dallas Police Officer Who Shot Unarmed Teen Will Receive No Jail Time

Four years after shooting unarmed teen Kelvion Walker, former Dallas cop Amy Wilburn was sentenced to only 18 months probation, WFAA8 reported.

Senior Corporal Amy Wilburn was originally indicted on a felony aggravated assault charge which could have been a life sentence, but instead, she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor on Tuesday to recklessly discharging a firearm.

In 2014 Wilburn chased a suspected stolen car and Walker who was 19-years-old at the time was an unarmed passenger. Police dash cam video shows the driver jumped out of the car and Wilburn walked up and immediately shot Walker who was still in his seatbelt. Wilburn was fired from the force after an internal affairs investigation.

“For the rest of my life, you will be a part of me,” Walker told Wilburn in court. “It’s really been hurting me and killing me on the inside. Every day I look at my scars, every day I wake up to a bullet that’s still in me.”

The victim has suffered from more than three surgeries and racked up in over $300,00 in medical bills.

Wilburn is being forced to hand over her peace officer certification and is dealing with pending litigation.

Walker added that the shooting has affected his life in a major way. “Every time I see a police now, I get the shakes, like I’m cold. That’s just terrifying because they’re here to protect and serve,” he said.

Both parties are set to attend the trial in August for Walker’s multi-million dollar federal civil case. His attorneys assured the guilty plea could have a positive effect on the case.
