Los Angeles Renames Street In Honor of Barack Obama

Former President Barack Obama received the honor of having a popular Los Angeles street named after him.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently announced that “Obama Boulevard” was in full effect on Twitter Tuesday evening. He wrote, “We’re thrilled that Angelenos and visitors will forever be reminded of the legacy of President @BarackObama when traveling across L.A.”

The Los Angles City Council decided to rename Rodeo Road after approving a 2017 proposal by Council President Herb Wesson, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 3.5-mile section of road that becomes Obama Boulevard is a street in southwest Los Angeles that runs east from near the border with Culver City and should not be confused with Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Garcetti added in his tweet, “It’s official: our City Council has voted to rename Rodeo Road to ‘Obama Boulevard’!”

California also renamed a section of the 134 Freeway after the 44th president in September 2017 to President Barack H. Obama Highway.

The city council’s decision was announced on the 55th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Wesson tweeted, “#OnThisDay in 1963, #MLK‘s “I Have a Dream” speech took place at the March on Washington. 55 years on, this defining moment lives on in our hearts and inspires us to continue fighting for justice.” He added, “Also #OTD in 2008 @BarackObama became the first African-American presidential nominee from a major political party.”

Obama Boulevard is a residential street in a primarily Black area. Dorsey High School and Baldwin Hills Elementary School are located on the strip.
