Maxine Waters Boldly Brushes Off Death Threats: ‘If You Shoot at Me, You Better Shoot Straight’

Congresswoman Maxine Waters remains defiant and unfazed after recent death threats to her office in response to her calls for resistance against President Donald Trump.

Waters (D-Calif.) took the podium at the “Families Belong Together” rally in Los Angeles on Saturday and directly addressed the harassment she’s received since Trump accused her of calling for violence against members of his Cabinet. The California Democrat was forced to cancel two appearances after seeing an increase in threats to her office, including one “very serious death threat” from someone in Texas.

She was even the subject of a thinly veiled threat from the president himself, who warned her to “watch her back.” Still, Waters said she has “no fear” and will remain “in this fight.”

“And I know there are those who are talking about censuring me, talking about kicking me out of Congress, talking about shooting me, talking about hanging me,” she told the crowd. “All I have to say is this: If you shoot me, you better shoot straight. There’s nothing like a wounded animal.”

Waters has received criticism from both sides of the aisle for her comments encouraging people to confront members of Trump’s administration in public as a show of resistance against his “zero tolerance” immigration policy separating migrant families at the border. Her call to action came after one Cabinet member was heckled out of Mexican restaurant while another was refused service altogether.

On Saturday, Waters didn’t let up in her public rebuke of Trump, telling the crowd she was “willing to make whatever sacrifices” necessary to get him out of office.

“I’m not about to let this country go by the way of Donald Trump,” she said. ” … We’re sick and tired of him. He has been there too long. They dare me to say ‘Impeach him.’ Today I say, ‘Impeach 45.’ ”
