Singaporean Television Show Faces Backlash over Incredibly Racist Blackface Character

It is 2016, and there are places in the world that still think blackface is acceptable to put on television.

Mediacorp, the Singapore national broadcaster, airs a web series called I Want To Be A Star, and one of the episodes features a Chinese actor named Shane Pow in blackface and  an Afro wig.

The script, according to Mashable, contained multiple racial slurs. In this particular episode, there was a casting director who was looking for an African actor, and another character suggested that they hire an Indian actor instead, saying “They’re all the same,” in regard to Blacks, Indians and others who have dark skin.

At some point, Shane Pow’s character replaced the African actor on set. And as if it could not get any more racist, another character on the show is afraid of Pow in blackface, because she thinks he is African.

People on Twitter were not amused.

Mediacorp eventually released what they intended to be an apology, noting that their very outward displays of racism were completely unintentional.

Though “apology” is a strong and inaccurate word for the statement Mediacorp released, they at least took the offending episode out of the queue. Critics, however, were still unimpressed, tweeting to say how inadequate of an apology this was.
