Video Shows Shocking Moments Onlookers Failed to Help Chicago Man Who was Beaten, Robbed, Ran Over by Cab
This 4 minute and 15 second video, obtained and published by The Chicago Tribune shows the night a Chicago man was beaten, robbed, and ultimately run over by a passing taxi cab, all while onlookers did nothing. 32 year-old Marques Gaines entered a Chicago 7-Eleven to buy some chips in the early morning hours of Feb. 7, 2016. As he was exiting the convenience store, an unidentified assailant approached him and attempted to pick a fight. Gaines tried to walk away from the situation but was knocked unconscious by the man. Immediately after, two other men can be seen running to Gaines’ body, rummaging through his pockets as he lay unconscious in the middle of the street. A crowd of bystanders begin to form around Gaines but no one does anything to help him or thinks to move his body out of the street. About two minutes later, a cab pulls up to the curb unaware of the body in the street, and run Gaines over. He died from him injuries four hours later.
“We as people, as humans, we should care for one another,” Drexina Nelson, Gaines’ closest relative, told the Tribune. “Who leaves a person in the street for that long? That’s devastating to me — the fact that he could have been saved. He could still be here with us,” she said.
