What Changes Are You Willing to Make?

One of the things I’ll be talking about at my upcoming Launch Yourself LIVE workshop in DC is the mindset you need to start and grow your own business. In short, you have to make the time and put in the work.

Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? This is, of course, something you already know. The problem is, we often don’t go deeper to explore what that specifically means for each of us individually. If your goal is to ultimately start and grow a business doing what you love and make good money at it, you won’t be able to spend your leisure time how you want for the first few years. Unless you have money to hire a full-time team to do all the work for you, you’ll be up many late nights and weekends figuring out your sales and marketing.

Specifically, this means you’ll have to make some major changes in how you spend your time. Instead of going out with the girls every weekend, you need to reserve that block of time to work on your business, especially if you have a full-time job and/or kids commanding all your attention during the week. Rather than watching your favorite TV shows every night, you should probably turn off the boob tube and focus on getting your website up and running.

But really, this mindset shift isn’t just for aspiring entrepreneurs.

When you’re intentional about how you spend your time and resources, you can achieve anything you want. (click to tweet this quote!)

What if your goal is to lose 20 pounds this year? Well, you probably need to start incorporating healthier choices into your current lifestyle. You may want to make some changes to your morning routine by waking up 90 minutes earlier so you can pack a healthy lunch and hit the gym for some cardio before you head to work. This might also require you to rethink how you spend your evenings. It’s hard to wake up early when you stay up late!

What if one of your goals is to travel to another country? Well, unless you’re big ballin’, you’ll probably need to save some money to pay for the trip. This will require you to make some changes, like spending your extra time earning more money, staying away from the mall and buying stuff you don’t need and reducing your living expenses.

Right now, I live with a roommate to keep my expenses down so I can use the extra money to travel (I’m headed to Thailand next month!) and make more investments into my business. I pay just $700 a month for a large bedroom in a secure high-rise with my own private bathroom and full use of the kitchen. Best of all, it’s in Alexandria, just 15 minutes from DC and near several Metro stations! My roommate is a 71-year old Ethiopian woman who’s so much like my own sassy grandmother. She also runs her own business from home and we get along great. I found her and the apartment on good ol’ Craigslist in the “rooms and shares” section. I never thought I’d actually like living with another person, but I’ve gotten used to this lifestyle and the financial benefits that come along with it!

It’s never too late to pursue the life you want. NEVER. But it’s important to remember that:

If the life you want is radically different from the life you have, you’re going to have to make some big changes. (click to tweet this quote!)
